Description

Novelist Alaa Al Aswany is passionate about teaching and nurturing young literary talent. He will be giving a series of creative writing workshops in Brooklyn, New York beginning in January 2018.

The art of writing begins with reading critically. Reading Fiction is a five-week class where Alaa Al Aswany teaches the tools to appreciate great literary works and learn from the approach of the writers. Techniques include interpreting fiction, recognizing underlying themes, and decoding allegory.

Through readings, writing exercises, and class discussions, we examine works by such authors as Anton Chekhov, Ernest Hemingway, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Kate Chopin, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, E. L. Doctorow, Nélida Piñon, Chinua Achebe, Yusuf Idris, and George Orwell, among others. Students will write and discuss their analysis of three literary masterpieces.

The workshop will be held on Mondays for five weeks, from January 8 to February 5, 2018 from 6:30 pm–9:30 pm (three hours a week, 15 class hours in total).

The cost of the class is $299. For details and schedule, please visit our website: AlaaAlAswany.com.
