Ratio: Building Knowledge, Learning and Engagement
Train-the-Trainer Workshop
Build Classrooms Where Students Learn Deeply
Too many classrooms treat content delivery like a checklist. Students pass through lessons but often don’t engage, think deeply, or retain essential knowledge. Teachers burn energy trying to compensate for gaps, yet these efforts still don’t translate to student gains.
Ratio fixes that. By focusing on knowledge-building and structured discussion, writing, and questioning practices, Ratio helps transform classrooms into environments where thinking becomes the norm and students master the content. Ratio techniques boost the number of students who actively participate and the depth of the thinking they do.
Join Doug Lemov and the Teach Like a Champion team, and leave equipped to train teachers on how to support students in participating fully and thinking deeply. Workshop participants will walk away with a deep understanding of effective techniques PLUS all the materials to pass along this training to colleagues back on campus.
What You’ll Get (Outcomes)
- A framework for analyzing student engagement in a classroom — Participation Ratio and Think Ratio.
- Strategies to support participation, engagement, and comprehension across diverse student populations — usable in class the next week
- Practice activities that will broaden teachers’ capacity to increase Ratio through classroom writing, discussion, and questioning.
- A complete Implementation Toolkit — ready-to-use presentation slide deck, participant guides, and illustrative classroom videos of expert teachers.
Why This Works
- Ratio techniques derive from decades of research in cognition, reading science, and classroom practice. We see these techniques utilized in classroom videos of highly effective teachers.
- Schools using Ratio report marked improvements in student engagement, depth of thinking, writing quality, and classroom discussions — often within weeks.
- TLAC's Train-the-Trainer format empowers your attending educators to lead this workshop back at your campus, using activities, language, and video clips that resonate with your team.
See It In Action: Real Teachers, Real Classrooms
What makes TLAC training different? You’ll watch actual classroom videos showing these techniques in action. This isn’t a boring lecture.
No other training gives you this level of visual clarity. All TLAC workshops utilize content from our video library of over 1,700 clips collected over 17 years from master teachers around the globe. You’ll leave knowing exactly what these techniques look like in real life.
Practice Until You’re Confident
You won’t just learn these techniques. You’ll practice them repeatedly until you can teach them to others.
Through guided practice sessions, participants will:
- Practice techniques with peers
- Get feedback from expert facilitators
- Build confidence through repetition
- Action plan to guide practice with teachers back at school
Leave ready to lead professional development that actually changes teacher practice.

Who to Send
TLAC workshops use a Train-the-Trainer format. We prepare instructional leaders and school leadership teams to deliver excellent training on Teach Like a Champion 3.0 techniques. Schools typically send a team of two to five instructional leaders and teachers in order to have several key team members ready to deliver and support the training back at their campuses.
No need to hire additional consultants or send everyone to training. Your team becomes the experts who sustain these effective practices in your classrooms.
