Raspberry Pi Hands-On Build Day: IoT & Automation Workshop

Overview

Raspberry Pi IoT & Automation workshop for engineering students. Build real projects in teams using sensors and Python. Limited seats

About the Event

This is a hands-on workshop where students will build practical IoT and automation systems using the Raspberry Pi. The project tracks were chosen based on real needs observed around our campus, including classroom energy use, lab safety, basic monitoring, and small utility automations.

What You’ll Learn

  • Raspberry Pi Hardware and OS Basics
  • GPIO programming with Python.
  • Interfacing sensors and actuators
  • Data logging and simple dashboards
  • Working in small technical teams.

Project Tracks (Choose One)

  • Industrial Environment Monitor + Ventilation Control
Inspired by ventilation problems in some labs and workshop rooms. It measures temperature and air quality, and it controls intakes or exhausts automatically.
  • Smart Laboratory Safety & Shutoff System
Designed to address common safety problems in chemistry and fabrication labs. Measure hazardous gases, heat, and VOCs to spot issues and trigger alerts or activate safety systems.
  • Energy Monitor + Auto-Shutdown
Useful for tracking the power usage of equipment and preventing overload. It measures how much power appliances consume and can automatically turn them off if it detects problematic consumtion patterns.
  • Home/Classroom Automation Hub
Reflects the need for automatic control of lights and fans in rooms often used by students. Uses motion and light sensors and allows for manual override.

Each team receives components, worksheets, and mentor support.
