About this event
Raga Roots: A Beginner’s Journey Through Yaman & Bhairav
A Three Part Introductory Class to Raga Composition & Technique led by Pandit Suman Laha
The Philosophical Research Society is proud to welcome North Indian classical master Pandit Suman Laha for a three class series, leading beginners – of any instrument – to discover the musical and spiritual foundations of raga composition and technique. An esteemed teacher and virtuoso veena (a lute-like Indian stringed instrument) musician, Laha invites you to unlock the vibrant world of North Indian classical music in a friendly, hands-on series designed for absolute newcomers—no prior raga knowledge required.
Over the course of these classes you will:
• Hear & Feel the Soundscape
Experience the serene dusk mood of Raga Yaman and the meditative dawn character of Raga Bhairav through guided listening and live demonstration.
• Build Your Own Raga Vocabulary
Learn the ascending and descending note patterns (āroha/avaroha), signature phrases (pakad), and why certain notes create specific emotional colors.
• Play—or Sing—From Day One
Whether you bring a guitar, violin, bansuri, keyboard, or just your voice, you’ll practice easy call-and-response drills that translate raga concepts to your chosen instrument.
• Compose & Improvise Confidently
Craft short melodic themes (gats) and try improvisation within the tala (rhythmic cycles) in a supportive circle of fellow beginners.
• Develop a Personal “Sādhana”
Walk away with a concise daily practice plan that deepens listening skills, intonation, and creative expression long after the course ends.
Who should join?
Musicians and vocalists of any style who are curious about new musical languages, enjoy ear-based learning, and want to add expressive depth to their playing. No prerequisite theory or reading is needed—just enthusiasm and an open mind. Bring any instrument – or just your voice! All are welcome.
Discover how two timeless ragas can expand your musical palette and inspire lifelong exploration. Your raga journey starts here!
