When we communicate with people from different cultures, there’s always the risk that what we say or do might offend someone. Oftentimes we don’t know what we did to cause the offense…and how we handle the situation can be the difference between fostering a more inclusive workplace or unintentionally creating a more hostile one.

Dealing with “microaggressions” – defined as verbal and nonverbal cues that convey disrespect toward a particular social group – requires a level of comfort and skill that must be learned and practiced. While avoiding engagement or becoming defensive can be common practice, there are proven practices that can help bring us closer together and heal racial divisions.

This is a collective challenge that most of us – regardless of our race, gender, sexual orientation, or national origin – can relate to.

In this interactive workshop, you’ll learn what racial microaggressions are, learn strategies for effectively engaging people who’ve experienced a microaggression, and increase your comfort in having these courageous conversations. Prepare to have your eyes opened to things you might be doing that are harming others that you have no idea you’re doing.

Meet the Trainer

Dr. Caprice D. Hollins has over 20 years of experience working with ethnically diverse populations, providing mental health services, facilitating workshops and teaching graduate courses as an adjunct professor at several local universities. She is currently an Affiliate Professor at The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology. After serving as the Director of Equity, Race & Learning Support for Seattle Public Schools for four years she co-founded Cultures Connecting, LLC, providing culturally relevant professional development workshops, keynotes, leadership coaching and consulting services to organizations seeking to improve their skills in effectively engaging all cultures. She co-authored Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Strategies for Facilitating Conversations on Race.

Cancellation policy:

The cancellation fee is $45.

If you must cancel your registration, you may request a refund minus the $45 fee up to 3 working days prior to the workshop date. After this date, no refunds will be issued. Please note that “no-shows” will be charged the full workshop fee. All fees must be received within 90 days after the workshop or a service fee of $45 will be added.

Lunch will be on your own; there is a microwave and Farestart cafe in the building, and meal delivery services such as UberEats or Postmates deliver to the building.
