Quilting for Beginners: Make a Log Cabin Quilt
Overview
Join us for a four-part quilting workshop where we’ll create a traditional log cabin quilt. In 12 hours of guided instruction, you’ll learn the foundations of quilt making, while constructing a 30” x 30” wall hanging or small lap quilt made up of nine log cabin blocks. The Log Cabin block is a beloved traditional 9-patch quilt block. The red center square represents the hearth, warming the center of the home, with “logs” constructed around the hearth. This block contains stories of comfort, community, and resilience. It's the perfect winter project!
In this workshop you will learn:
- How to plan and design a quilt
- Understand traditional log cabin quilt block construction and variations
- Accurate fabric cutting and strip piecing (using a rotary cutter and quilt ruler)
- How to machine piece a quilt
- Pressing with an iron for clean seams
- Quilt top assembly and lay out
- How to make a quilt sandwich and basting methods
- Hand-quilting
- Binding your quilt
- Labeling your quilt
Alchemy provides materials and has available fabric to choose from, but if you’d like to bring special fabric from your own stash, you will need at least 9 different fabrics, ¼ yard each + 1 yard for the backing fabric. Traditionally, log cabin blocks are constructed of intentionally arranged light and darks, to create an interesting visual effect. You can continue with this tradition or break the rules and use whichever patterns and colors you’d like. Bring your own sewing machine if you are able! Alchemy has a few available if you are unable to bring your own. You must already know basic machine sewing to take this class. For those who don't, consider taking Machine Sewing 101 leading up to this class.
This class is taught by Lopez-based textile artist Lily Nash.
This class is held at the Art Barn at the new Alchemy Art Farm at 45 Hawthorne Lane. Directions and parking information will be included in your confirmation email.
Registration: Please register early if you are able, as it helps us to assure that classes meet their minimums in order to run! If you register more than three weeks before this class begins, a 20% early bird discount will automatically be applied to your ticket at checkout.
A Note on Ticket Pricing: We are offering sliding scale tickets in order to keep our classes accessible to as many community members as possible. There are three price tiers. Sustaining tickets help us continue to invest in programming. Full price tickets cover the costs associated with running classes. Accessibility tickets are priced below what it costs for us to run a class. If the cost of a full price ticket is a hardship, we encourage you to purchase a sliding scale ticket. If you can pay the full price or sustaining price, please choose that option so we can keep providing arts programming to the community.
Tuition Assistance: Tuition assistance is available for Alchemy classes and workshops if finances are a barrier. Apply for tuition assistance here.
