About this event

Queer Movement Collective is a monthly accessible, brave space for queer and trans folx to express themselves and experiment with embodiment. Inspired by 5 rhythms created by Gabrielle Roth, QMC is expanding and queering what community dance spaces can be.

It is not facilitated, it is a free form expressive movement space. The music starts slow for folks to take their time dropping into the space and the music moves in a wave building up energy, then crescendoing back to stillness. We do a guided closing moment at the end and folks are welcome to socialize in the foyer.

Our sliding scale is now $0-10, we want it to be explicit that no one is turned away for a lack of funds and you are welcome to dance for free. We make our rental fee each month and we love that we can donate extra funds, however we want to support our direct community first. So please come use this space to dance, move, grieve, play, and connect if you so please.

While we cannot guarantee a safe space we are doing our best to create an antiracist, homophobia and transphobia free, physically and economically accessible space. We are happy to engage in discussion and feedback about ways to improve as this group and space continues to grow.

Physical accessibility: the studio is on the ground floor and doorways accommodate chairs. There are two spacious gender neutral bathrooms that are also ADA accessible. There are chairs, bolsters, and other props that can accommodate seated dancing. Earplugs are provided for folks with audio sensitivity and masks are available for folks who feel more comfortable wearing them.

Ground Rules and Invitations

This is a sober space with the intention of creating a safer space and encouraging presence with your experience

Dancing is for the dance floor, talking is for the lobby

Please participate, whatever that looks like, witnessing others is different than spectating

This is a judgment free space of yourself and others, try on a lens of compassion and admiration

Take up space, be big

Notice resistance with curiosity and compassion

We encourage you to have an internal experience, however if you feel moved to dance with someone else make sure you get clear consent. Hand motions to communicate- open palms facing person to indicate invitation to dance, if yes- reciprocate open palms, if no- cross arms across chest

Listen to your body and take care of it

No phones out please, no videos or photos

Suggestion- this is an experimental space to expand the ways we inhabit and move in our bodies. We’re socialized to move certain ways and especially as queer and trans folx, we can walk through the world with self protection, hopefully this is a space you can feel free to move and be in your body however you feel called to. Aka- you can get weird!!
