Quartet for the End of Time: Music & Mathematics
Overview
~
Feed your soul while studying with this concert-lecture exploring Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time. Messiaen wrote this remarkable piece while a prisoner of war in Poland, and first premiered it with his fellow prisoners in the Nazi prison camp.
This masterpiece of chamber music is built on ideas ranging from prime-number mathematics to apocalyptic theology. To introduce the piece, Professor Andrew Shenton (Boston University) will share a short lecture unpacking Messiaen’s mystical and mathematical vision. Then, we’ll hear the quartet itself with a live performance by Professors Natalie Lin Douglas (Violin), Eran Egozy (Clarinet), Carol Ou (Cello), and Mia Chung-Yee (Piano).
Snacks will be provided after the concert; please reserve a free ticket to ensure an accurate headcount.
