About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 45 minutes

Quantum physics is often portrayed as mysterious and impossible to grasp but it doesn’t have to be.

Quantum for Everyone is an evening of engaging talks and live demonstrations designed to make quantum mechanics accessible, meaningful, and even fun. Whether you’re a student, a science enthusiast, or just curious, you’ll leave with a clearer understanding of how the quantum world behaves and why it matters.

Dr. Frank Rice, a lecturer in physics at Caltech, will take the audience on a journey through some of the most surprising discoveries in the history of science, how light and matter, once thought to behave predictably, turned out to follow strange quantum rules. Using clear explanations and hands-on demonstrations, he’ll connect the early breakthroughs in quantum physics to ideas that continue to shape science and technology today.

He’ll be joined by Caltech PhD students working on the frontiers of quantum research, who will offer short, accessible talks that pull back the curtain on what quantum mechanics really is and what it’s like to work on it day to day.

This event is part of ☀️ Summer of Quantum in LA 🌴, a 10-week celebration of quantum science across Southern California during the International Year of Quantum 2025.

What You’ll Experience

• Intuitive explanations of quantum concepts like wave-particle duality

• Demonstrations that reveal how electrons and light behave at the quantum level

• A look at historic experiments and why they still resonate today

• Glimpses into the cutting-edge quantum work happening right now at Caltech
