MX Oops, master of ceremonies, will invite you, the party people, into a sound bath turned DJ set. Diving into the world of their recent work, UnFiNiShEd aNiMaL, they welcome you to this party and multimedia performance inside Building 5 that uses the vibrant aesthetics of queer nightlife culture to reveal how cognitive bias connects us all. This is a journey toward wholeness, through bass, bars, and ecstatic bodies in motion. Come with your dancing shoes on to bounce, pulse, and twirl together to the sounds of global bass in the stunning Mass MoCA dance space Building 5.
Why is mysticism relevant today and how can the dance floor be a place to build a bridge between personal and transpersonal?
Transdisciplinary artist and educator MX Oops uses the embodied methodologies of club culture to explore how the dance floor creates a unique opportunity to expand and deepen our senses. In this session, they will share the forthcoming essay “ECSTATIC AESTHETICS: Queer Mysticism.” The essay queries: if mysticism includes a fluid movement beyond polarities of self and other, masculine and feminine, beyond binaries, is mysticism inherently queer? It unpacks how dance floor mystics harness spiritual energies on and off the dancefloor and how this augments identity, shifting culture.
About the ArtistMX Oops is a transmedia performance artist and educator whose work centers hybridity, encouraging ecstatic disobedience as a path toward embodied wellness. Their interdisciplinary practice combines dance, video design, costume/textile design, DJing, rap, and guided meditation. Through this multisensory approach, their work questions whether consciousness itself is the primary medium. The party is the point of departure, a queer site of transnational Afro-diasporic imagining. MX is the founder of Complex Stability, a research and multimedia production company, and an assistant professor in the Dance Program in Lehman College’s Department of Music, Multimedia, Theatre & Dance.
A certified yoga instructor (500hr RYT) and practitioner of Thai Yoga Massage, trained in various forms of energy healing, they completed a BA in dance and religion at the George Washington University and completed an Integrated Media Arts MFA at Hunter College. They are currently an Assistant Professor of Dance, Multimedia Performance, and Somatic Studies in the Department of Music, Multimedia, Theatre & Dance at Lehman College, City University of New York, USA.
