Sunday, July 13th from 9:00AM-4:00PM
Take a journey into the ancient Ukrainian art of Pysanky egg dyeing. In this immersive workshop, you'll learn the intricate techniques of decorating eggs using wax-resist and progressive dyeing methods, creating stunning and unique designs. Students can expect to create 2 finished eggs, the first being a traditional design with lots of teacher support including oral and written directions/pictures. The second egg can be another design with instructions, or students can use their creativity to produce their own unique designs.
Findings will be available to make the hollow eggs into hanging decorations if desired. Led by mixed media artist Jeanne Lally, you'll explore the history and symbolism behind Pysanky, as well as master the tools and materials needed to craft your own beautiful creations. No prior experience necessary – all skill levels are welcome!
$99 workshop fee does not include materials. The $15 materials kit can be purchased from the instructor at the beginning of the workshop.
NOTE: This class can be messy; students are encouraged to wear play clothing or an apron.
We will have an hour break for lunch midday. The studio will be closed during this break, but there are nearby parks where you can eat lunch if you brought your own, or you can check out one of the local restaurants in the area.
About the instructor: A lifelong multimedia artist, Jeanne Lally has studied under various artists and delved into many art mediums throughout her life. She is most influenced by her mother, Barbara Lally, herself a self-taught and very accomplished artist. The list of art mediums they have both studied/produced is quite long, including but not limited to enamel on copper, watercolor, oil painting, pastel, shibori, rug hooking, embroidery, batik, and of course pysanky. Barbara noticed the ornately decorated eggs on the cover of a cookbook, and the rest was history. She was a member/juror in the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, taught pysanky in numerous venues, and her pysanky artwork was featured in Yankee Magazine. Jeanne learned the art of pysanky through her mother, and now teaches the craft in honor of Barbara, who passed in 2023.
