Overview

Learn the core responsibilities, career paths, and leadership strategies that define successful managing editors across books and journals.

Managing editors are responsible for the operations of a publication or several publications, including books and journals, overseeing contributors, peer reviewers, editors, manuscript production steps, and freelance or other personnel. This session will provide a comprehensive look at the core responsibilities of managing editorial workflows in book and journal publishing, and the skills and knowledge that are required for a career as a managing editor. You’ll learn how you can build your career as a managing editor, ways to get involved in publishing industry associations, and lessons for becoming a successful leader in the field.

Bios

Cecilia Gray is a Production Editor at Simon & Schuster, Director of Operations at Inkluded, and Managing Editor of the GW Journal of Ethics in Publishing. She is currently earning her Master of Professional Studies in Publishing at George Washington University and served as a moderator for the 15th GW Ethics in Publishing Conference. She brings a passion for inclusive storytelling and ethical industry practices to her work.


Adrianna Borgia is the Managing Editor of Microbiology Spectrum and Microbiology Resource Announcements, two large-volume open access journals at the American Society for Microbiology. She oversees the strategic development and daily operations of the journals. Prior to that, she was a Production Team Manager at Elsevier. She is also the current Vice President of the International Society for Managing and Technical Editors (ISMTE).


Tara Cyphers is assistant director at The Ohio State University Press where she oversees the editorial, design, and production departments; acquires scholarship in rhetoric and communications studies; and serves as a member of the press leadership team. She has been in publishing since 2006, with past stints as a journals manager and as an editor for a commercial textbook publisher. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Association of University Presses (AUPresses).


Emilie Gunn is the Journals Director at the American Society of Clinical Oncology, where she oversees the publishing of 6 journals, including the society’s flagship publication, Journal of Clinical Oncology. She is also the current President of the Council of Science Editors.
