1. Identifying and promoting wellness and self-care
2. Effective coping, resiliency and recovery strategies
3. Cumulative stress recognition, effects and management
o Understanding burnout
4. Peer support best practice and policy
o Effective interface with a licensed mental health professional
o Understanding department policy regarding peer support
5. Basic crisis communication techniques
6. Alcohol and substance abuse
7. Impact of grief and loss
8. Cross cultural issues in peer support
9. Listening skills including verbal and nonverbal communication
10. Mental health crisis and crisis intervention
11. Common mental health and behavioral reactions (repeated grouping)
o Understanding depression
o Understanding post-trauma impact
o Understanding the impact of simple and complex trauma
o Understanding basic concepts of anxiety and depression
12. Critical incident stress management
13. Suicide risk, recognition and intervention models
14. Social, relational, organizational and substance use stressors
15. Strategies to identify and mitigate negative coping mechanisms
16. Statutory limits to privacy, confidentiality and privilege
17. Boundaries of peer support, recognizing peer support resources and the referral process
