Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for high functioning autism
This 3hr clinical seminar, taught by Dr. Diana Moga, will explore the principles of psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis with autistic clients without intellectual impairment and with low support needs. This population is often disregarded in published work on psychotherapy in autism and yet it is at the highest risk of suicide due to the painful awareness of difference. Learn about the unique challenges faced by individuals on the autism spectrum and how psychodynamic therapy can help address these issues. Topics will include:
- Internalized ableism and shame and relational trauma in autism
- Moving away from the conflict/deficit model and into a more nuanced developmental understanding taking into account adaptations and defenses as well as conflicts surrounding neurodivergence
- Providing neurodivergent affirming psychotherapy and adapting psychodynamic and psychoanalytic technique to autistic clients
- Clinical material illustrating alliance building, goals of treatment and evolving psychotherapy with autistic clients
- A psychoanalytic lens on autistic clients and the psychodynamics involved in treatment
