PSNY Virtual Workshop: Reading to Write

An all-levels generative virtual workshop with poet Esther Lin!

Good poems arise from good reading. In our workshop we'll read two poems, "Mythology" by Jenny George and "Moose in Snow" by David Hernandez and close-read them for what we admire and what makes them tick. Based on our conversation on their shapes and effects, we'll create bespoke prompts for us to write from. My hope is that we nourish our writerly voices with others', and practice writing according and away from what we read.

About the Instructor: Esther Lin was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and lived in the United States as an undocumented immigrant for 21 years. She is the author of Cold Thief Place, winner of the 2023 Alice James Award and longlisted for the National Book Award. She is the co-editor of Here to Stay: Poetry and Prose from the Undocumented Diaspora (HarperCollins 2024). She was a Wallace Stegner Fellow and is currently co-organizes the Undocupoets, which promotes the work of undocumented poets and raises consciousness about the structural barriers that they face in the literary community.
