PSNY Virtual Workshop: Beyond the Narrative
Overview
An all-levels generative virtual workshop with poet Sharon Lin!
As humans, we are drawn to narratives—origin stories, the hero's journey, cause and effect. We seek comfort and clarity in structures that explain our lives and the world. But in what ways can the very form of narrative limit our imagination and artistic potential?
In this workshop, we will explore poems that challenge the necessity of linearity, plot, and singular "truth." Through close reading and generative exercises, we will explore techniques in fragmentation and contradiction, drawing inspiration from poets including Claudia Rankine, Layli Long Soldier, Danez Smith, Ilya Kaminsky, Diane Seuss, Kim Hyesoon, Solmaz Sharif, Safia Elhillo, and Hala Alyan.
About the Instructor: Sharon Lin is a poet and essayist. Her work appears in The New York Review of Books, DIAGRAM, The Kenyon Review, Sine Theta, the Offing, and elsewhere and is anthologized in Best New Poets 2021 and Voices of the East Coast (Penmanship Books).
