Overview

Part of The Poetry Society of New York's Weekly Virtual Workshop Series.

An all-levels generative virtual workshop with poet Lauren Parker!

Ancestor Work Through Poetry is a narrative poetry workshop that focuses on connection with your spiritual guides. Ancestor work is the act of connecting with your personal history to better tell the story of your life. Using poetry as channeling work, the exercises specialize in considering photographs as inspirational imagery to write poetic stories and find your own truth in your personal history. No previous ancestor work or channeling experience required!

About the Instructor: Lauren Parker is a fourth generation female breadwinner descended from male charlatans, and thus has grown up to become a very educated liar. She is a writer, instructor, zine maker, and visual artist and has written for the Toast, Strange Horizons, The Racket, Xtra Magazine, Catapult, and Autostraddle. Her work focuses on the intersection of class, queerness, and the occult. She’s the author of the poetry collection We Are Now the Thing in the Woods (Bottlecap Press, 2023), Dark Way Down (Animal Heart Press, 2025), and Spells for Success (Simon Element, 2025). She has a newsletter, Do You Want to Do Some Witchcraft and is the co-owner of Hidden Hand, an online metaphysical and witchcraft store.
