Professional Boundaries
Overview
A fundamental aspect of working in alcohol and drug services is the ability to build excellent relationships with vulnerable people. This is a crucial part of the role, and a reason many of us are drawn to this kind of work in the first place. However, as important as these relationships are, it’s also vital to maintain professional boundaries.
Course objectives
• Consider the differences between personal and professional relationships
• Be able to think more critically about appropriate professional-client boundaries
• Have an awareness and understanding of the effects of boundary crossings and violations
•Consider the RISC model for boundary crossings
•Have an increased understanding of the importance of effective communication with clients
•Gain an enhanced insight into possible early indicators of boundary crossings and violations, and be better equipped with how to deal effectively with potential violations
•Be able to reflect on their own professional practice concerning boundary maintenance
