A bit about the speaker...
Dr. Schenck was born in New York City in 1951, received his B.A. degree from the Johns Hopkins University in 1972, his M.D. degree from the State University of
New York at Buffalo in 1976, and completed a Psychiatry Residency at the University
of Minnesota in 1980, where he is currently a Professor. He is senior staff psychiatrist at
the Hennepin County Medical Center and member of the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center in Minneapolis. In 1986 Dr. Schenck and his longstanding colleague, the late Dr. Mark Mahowald, first reported on REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), and.in 1996 they reported that RBD commonly heralds future parkinsonism, which initiated a growing international research effort on RBD and alpha-synuclein neurodegenerative disorders. Drs. Schenck and Mahowald jointly received the “William C. Dement Academic Achievement Award” from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine in 2007, the Sleep Research Society “Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award” in 2010, and the American Academy of Neurology "Sleep Science Award" in 2017. In 2009 Dr. Schenck was the Founding President of the International REM Sleep Behavior Disorder Study Group. He was Co-Chair of the Parasomnias Committee for The International Classification of Sleep Disorders-2nd Edition (ICSD-2), and was a member of the Parasomnias Task Force for the ICSD-3 and the ICSD-3-Text Revision. His research interests also include the Non-REM parasomnias (Disorders of Arousal, Sexsomnia, Sleep-Related Eating Disorder) and Sleep-Related Psychogenic Dissociative Disorders. He served as an Associate Editor of the journal Sleep from 2010-2021. He wrote an Editorial that will soon be published in Sleep entitled, “The Need For Expanded Global Perspectives and Innovative Protocols With REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD)” that commented on the report (in the same issue of Sleep) by Bramich S, Alty J, et al. “The Tasmania-London (TASLON) protocol to detect isolated REM sleep behaviour disorder using home-based video-polysomnography.”
