About this event
PRISM is committed helping members to embed equality, diversity and inclusion across all its activities. This workshop will provide some examples of how to do this and inspire delegates to develop their own approaches, too.
The event will give delegates a space for discussion, experience sharing, and a framework in which to consider how they can develop an inclusive approach to their work, team and research.
Guest speakers: Debra Fearnshaw and Emma Hadfield-Hudson(University of Nottingham)
Debra recently completed a secondment to EPSRC and developed together with her colleague Emma Hadfield-Hudson a guide on Expectations for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, in consultation with the research community. These aim to help support the Engineering and Physical Sciences community to achieve greater equality, diversity and inclusion in their research environment and give some practical examples of how ED&I has been implemented.
Debra will talk through the expectations and as a network we can share our experiences of supporting ED&I in our roles.

Professional Research Investment and Strategy Managers (PRISMs) are managers of large research, training, and network grants who have strategic responsibilities and drive the growth of the research clusters they manage. PRISMs sit at the interface of research and support services in Higher Education Institutions.
PRISMs utilise their emotional intelligence, listening, communication, coordination, and analytical skills, as well as recognised leadership traits such as empathy and persuasiveness, to enable research collaborations and build research communities. They are vital in helping to ensure the efficient management, coordination and organisation of the grants that they support. These contributions help to support the development of high-quality research outputs.
PRISMs usually have research experience at PhD level, and/or come from an industrial project management background. This is crucial experience to navigate the academic, industrial, and governmental culture, with the intellectual capacity to condense and disseminate research outcomes and represent the research investments they manage.
Founded in April 2020, the PRISM network pursues two main aims:
1. To bring the widely dispersed PRISM community across the UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) together.
2. To engage with UKRI on a cultural shift for research teams in HEIs, which includes better recognition and progression pathways for PRISM roles.
