Prepping Students for the TABE Reading Post-test and the TASC Reading Test (3 hours)

Both the TABE 11/12 Reading Test and the TASC Reading test require different approaches from the old TABE and the GED. Texts are more complex, with far more emphasis on informational texts of various kinds. Questions are different also; students must be better able to retain information about a whole text as there are fewer "right there" questions than in previous tests. The ability to distinguish between general ideas and specific details is key. In addition, students need to understand text structure, and how writers "develop" text, all while handling question types that are cognitively demanding. In this workshop, we will take a close look at the two tests, how they similar and different. We will consider question types that give students the most trouble and offer materials and activities teachers can use to better prepare their students to do well on the two reading tests.

• All NYC RAEN workshops are for teachers/staff of NYSED-funded adult education programs.
