Prepare for a Changing World: Practical Resilience Processes & Operations
Event Information
Description
Resilience is the capacity to survive and thrive in the face of stressors and shocks. Disasters can shake us to the core, but the underlying stressors (from pollution and crumbling infrastructure to poverty and social injustice) make us vulnerable and determine our collective ability to recover. As the size, frequency, and cost of disasters increases globally, we need to reframe constraints as opportunities and rethink the design and operations of buildings, organizations and communities.
Organizations, from community-based non-profits to universities to public institutions, can take a leading role in preparing their buildings, neighborhoods and economies for a changing world. Heather Rosenberg will lead this highly interactive, charrette-style workshop to will explore the core concepts of resilience and methods for implementing the Building Resilience process pioneered by Building Resilience-Los Angeles in partnership with the USGBC Los Angeles Chapter. Drawing on experience with the City of Los Angeles, the LA Metropolitan Transit Authority, and dozens of other public, private and non-profit organizations, this practical, step-by-step training will provide real world examples and methodologies that can be used in designing and implementing resilience programs that provide value in “blue sky” days as well as times of disruptive change. From forming teams and setting goals to evaluating risks and planning for continual improvement, participants will acquire new perspectives that can help transform their practice to be ready for a changing world.
