Science fairs for adults – how Caveat does happy hour.

This week – Higher Education

taste of science; bringing cutting edge science out of the lab and into bars near you! From April 22-28 we’re launching a 5 borough takeover, hosting a packed week of events for our annual taste of science festival. Come and hear the latest from world-renowned scientists, in the comfort of your local bar. Quizzing the experts while they’re tipsy is heartily encouraged!

To wrap up the festival, we’ll bring our most admired science communication friends together at Caveat and throw our first ever taste of science Block Party! After a week of discovery, we invite you to celebrate with us and kick back with fellow NYC science advocates and unashamed nerds whose sense of wonder is alive and kicking. Cheers!

taste of science: Sense-ational Science
We are taste of science; we bring mind-bending science out of the lab and into bars near you! When was the last time you thought about the biology of taste? Was it sixth grade, looking at an outdated diagram of sweet and salty taste bud regions on the tongue? If that’s the case, join us for a refresher course on gustation – we promise this will be a whole lot more fun! We’ll scramble your senses so you can test whether your nose or tongue contribute more towards your enjoyment of beer (or wine!), and we’ll put that old diagram to the test and find out where sweet and salty taste buds are really located on the tongue. Bon ap!

BioBus: What the %&$# am I looking at?
Meet the scientists and microscope nerds who run BioBus – operators of research-grade mobile microscope laboratories that drive all around New York City. Although you can usually find us parked outside of grade schools, tonight, we’ll bring some of the BioBus experience to you. The name of the game is “What the %&$# am I looking at?” — using your powers of observation and reasoning, you’ll be challenged to use a microscope to identify animate and inanimate objects found across our fine city. You’ll get extra points for more scientific answers: “It’s a bug!” is not as good as “It’s a roach!,” which will be beat by “That’s a fine example of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica.” (“It’s gross,” is not a scientifically valid answer and will earn zero points.) Leave with a new appreciation for the micro-world that surrounds you, which you probably usually ignore.

A Dinosaur Variety Show
Ever crowd-sourced a T. rex? Played with fossilized poop? Identified your spirit dinosaur? Or maybe you just really want to discuss why the hell T. rex had such tiny arms. These adventures and more await at a station 65 million years in the making, and brought to the anthropocene by Dustin Growick, Museum Hack’s Team Lead for Science and the host of The Dinosaur Show

Bio on Tap
Which animals have been to space? Why do mammals really hibernate? Spark your curiosity and answer questions like these at Biology on Tap! We bring scientists, educators, and other biology enthusiasts together for monthly talks at a local bar. Get a taste of Bio on Tap by stopping by our table for additional information, and dive in to some bio-centric investigation! You can learn a lot about an animal by looking at what it leaves behind. Take time to sift through owl pellets, identify what the owl ate, and share in a discussion about movement of energy and food webs! Hope to see you there!

Tickets: FREE WITH ADVANCE RSVP,  or $5 at the door
