About this Event

Water BMPs are individual practices or combinations of practices that, based on research, field testing, and expert review, have been determined to be the most effective and practical means for maintaining or improving the water quality of surface and groundwater. BMPs are typically implemented in combination to prevent, reduce, or treat pollutant discharges off-site. Implementing BMPs can also help Florida vegetable growers (such as tomatoes, peppers, squashes, watermelon, etc.) increase crop yield, productivity, and plant nutrition. BMPs must be based on sound science, be technically feasible, and be economically viable.

This workshop day includes a lecture on water BMPs/irrigation/fertigation lecture and the showcasing of a microirrigation/fertigation area at the UF/IFAS Extension Polk County Office. Participants will learn about the basic concepts of water BMPs for vegetable farms, fertigation practices, and other related topics. Participants will be able to visualize how to implement these practices into their operations and will be able to learn the benefits of water BMPs.

Instructors:

  • Luis O. Rodriguez, UF/IFAS Extension Small Farms and Pesticide Education Agent, Polk County.
  • Matt Warren, Environmental Administrator, FDACS (Invited speaker).
