Pre-Clinical OSCE Teaching: Session 8 - Pulses, BP and CPR Refresher

Students will be expected to know the correct procedures for measuring pulse rate and blood pressure:

• Measure pulse rate by palpation, estimate systolic blood pressure by palpation, fit a sphygmomanometer and measure systolic and diastolic blood pressure using a sphygmomanometer and auscultation.
• Students should understand the difference between systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure (pulse pressure).
• Students should be able to identify and palpate the following pulse sites: Radial, Brachial, Carotid, Temporal, Dorsalis pedis, Posterior tibial and Facial
• For each site they should note the pulse rate, rhythm, character and volume.
• Students should be able to name, identify and explain the Korotkoff sounds.

CPR:

• Demonstrate the correct DRSABC (Danger, Response, Shout for help, Airway, Breathing, Circulation) approach.
• Perform an initial assessment of an unresponsive patient and initiate CPR.
• Demonstrate correct chest compression rescue breath technique.
• Revise indications to stop CPR
