Overview

Through the genre of the string quartet, our closing concert with The Rhythm Method showcases the diversity of Ukrainian musical practices.

The 2025 festival begins with an exciting collaborative concert with TAK ensemble. Fantastyka (Ukrainian Sci-fi) will highlight Ukrainian contributions to the sci-fi literary genre and today’s hot-button discussions around technology and artificial intelligence.

Solomiya Moroz’s world premiere, a commission by UCMF, takes Volodymyr Vynnychenko’s classic sci-fi novel The Sun Machine as its starting point. According to the composer, “The book follows the story of a machine designed to make bread, a creation that initially seems poised to save humanity from hunger but as the story unfolds, it brings unforeseen consequences that paradoxically dooms humanity. The piece will take the ensemble on an odyssey where unexpected elements unfold.”

Ukrainian ideas will be placed in dialogue with other traditions as Moroz’s commission is paired with an abridged version of Taylor Brook’s Star Maker Fragments, based on British author Olaf Stapledon’s novel. Rounding out the program is a new arrangement of Leonid Hrabovsky’s “And it will be” written specifically for TAK ensemble.
