Practical Applications of Theory of Mind in Sign Language Interpreting
Overview
This practical session focuses on how to work effectively when Theory of Mind (ToM) differences are at play. We’ll explore real interpreting scenarios where ToM gaps can cause misunderstanding, and look at strategies you can use in the moment to safeguard message intent and client dignity.
We’ll also tackle some of the trickier aspects of language and meaning — including metaphor, sarcasm, and second-order belief challenges — and discuss how to adapt your approach without losing accuracy. The session will cover how to brief and debrief with professionals where ToM-related risks are present, so you can work more effectively as part of a wider team.
This is a hands-on, scenario-driven session designed to give you practical tools and confidence you can use straight away.
