EVENT DETAILS:

I started Brian Brain before I even joined PiL! It was me, Pete Jones, and my mate from school John Madden (who sadly passed a little while ago) producing. Wildly experimental, naive, and joyful, I think. In the middle of Punk/Post Punk, we questioned everything .....so no drums - the drums on 1/4" tape along with riotous applause and me introducing the band....perfect ventriloquist! We toured the states soon after the first PiL tour, out of our minds in many respects (touring the US without a label? Management?), but with bags of prescription speed!

The very short shows became quite violent as we started to throw things at the audience: bananas were spectacular, then anything seasonal that Woolworths had. One show, we had inflatable rabbits and stayed up all night hand-writing notes to put onto the easter eggs we threw: 'you sad loser' etc etc.

I took on a GGAllin audience and band and won, for a few hours anyway, until I had my nose and jaw smashed while pissing... We played Futurama Fest in the UK and toured the US another 6 or 7 times after that, making lots of friends, sleeping on lots of floors when we could. Those friendships still exist to this day! Tom Lash, whose floor we often slept on, played trumpet with us one night and introduced me to Trent. Wattie, from The Exploited, told me once he loved one side of our first EP. He said it was the perfect length of time for his egg white mohawk to be in the oven! As usual, it seems I always ignore or push to the back some of the things I've been involved in (there's no Pigface wall at the museum .....yet!) and Brian Brain is certainly something that deserves a closer look!
