Pottery for Beginners: Hands-On Wheel Workshop in Grand Rapids

Discover the joy of working with clay in this hands-on Pottery for Beginners workshop at Selah Studio in Grand Rapids. This two-hour class is designed for anyone curious about the pottery wheel — no prior experience needed!
With only 5 wheels available, each participant gets personalized guidance as you learn the basics of centering clay, pulling walls, and shaping a simple form. You’ll get a feel for the wheel while exploring your own creative expression in a welcoming, supportive environment.
There is the add on option for your pieces to be glazed, and fired by our studio team, and ready for pickup in about 3–4 weeks. If you choose to not add this on, your pieces will only be bisque fired.
Whether you come solo, with a friend, or as a small group, this workshop is the perfect introduction to pottery and a unique way to spend an evening in Grand Rapids.
What’s Included:
- 2 hours of guided instruction
- 1 wheel per person (5 guests max)
- Clay, tools, and all materials provided
- Bisque firing of your pieces (unglazed)
Optional Add-On:
Glazing + Final Firing Service
- For an additional $15 per piece, our studio team will glaze and fire your best piece. Pick out your glaze color at the end of class!
- Your finished pottery will be food-safe, dishwasher safe, and ready for pickup in about 3–4 weeks.
- If you choose not to add this on, your piece will only be bisque fired (unglazed).

Show centering → opening → pulling walls → basic cylinder Emphasize “practice > perfection”; one good piece is the goal
Guided first throw- 15 minutes
Everyone goes through the process with step-by-step coaching Quick pass at each wheel to correct hand position & speed
