What is a PortaCount anyway?

Question 2

If I fit test a disposable mask, does that mean it'll destroy the mask?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we have to probe the mask by punching a hole in it to attach it to the PortaCount for testing. So you'll have to use a new one for actual wear; please make sure you have another mask to put on after the one you brought is tested. An alternative option is to install a SIP valve in your mask.

Can I fit test my elastomeric respirator?

Accepted Answer

Yes! In fact, testing Honeywell, Moldex, GVS, Trend, and 3M bayonet-style reusable respirators with adapters will not damage the mask. Flo Mask can be tested with a probed filter.

Question 4

There's a mask that I'd really like to get to fit, but it has gaps. Can I bring it for fit testing?

Accepted Answer

It's best if you bring a mask that appears to fit you well, but we may be able to get too-big masks to fit using a stapler or head strap or other modifications. No guarantees.

Is there anything I can do to increase my chance of success with fit testing at the event?

I have a beard. How important is the instruction to shave before the event?

Accepted Answer

Essential. You are extremely unlikely pass a fit test with a beard. You must shave before fit testing; otherwise you are wasting a time slot that could go to someone else and a mask.

But I really like my beard! Can you please test it?

Accepted Answer

Only if you managed to pass an at-home Bitrex fit test in advance with your current amount of stubble, then you can sign up. Look up the following options to increase your chance of success with a beard or stubble: A. Singh Thattha technique B. OmniMask C. Zimi mask in your size D. Beard seal gel
