About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Join us on Friday, August 22 from 3–6pm at Haystack Farms for an immersive afternoon exploring the practice of honeybee wilding with Michael Thiele of Apis Arborea.

Michael Thiele is the founder of Apis Arborea, a nonprofit that supports the health and sovereignty of wild honeybees by creating nesting structures that mimic their natural habitats. Apis Arborea’s mission challenges conventional beekeeping and offers a new model, rooted in deep ecological understanding.

Together, we’ll reflect on the purpose and ecological value of wilding as an approach to conservation and land stewardship in organic farming. As part of this gathering, we’ll engage with the Apis Arborea TreeNest, a nesting habitat for wild honeybees designed by Michael using the principles of biomimicry, which will be installed on the farm earlier that day.

The discussion will examine how honeybees fit within larger ecosystems, the importance of creating natural habitats where they can thrive, and how the TreeNest supports a regenerative vision for Haystack Farms–including the future orchard and pollinator patch being designed by our CU Boulder MENV capstone fellows and the Wild Wellspring Farm plot owned and tended by the resident farmer, Krisan Christensen.

Food and drinks will be provided. Please feel free to bring your own chairs or blankets for sitting comfortably on the land.

This event is made possible in partnership with USDA TOPP: Transition to Organic Partnership Program
