Pointe Mouillee Walking Field Trip
Overview
Join Detroit Bird Alliance expert and eagle-eyed field trip leaders Jim Bull and Bruce Szczechowski for a morning of winter birding at Pointe Mouillee State Game Area! While it can be chilly, the birding couldn't be better. We may spot Snowy Owls, Northern Harriers, Canvasback Ducks, Short-eared Owls, and more. Your leaders will take you on about a four mile walk along the dikes at Point Mouillee.
Pointe Mouillee is a significant waterfowl habitat and one of the largest freshwater marsh restoration projects in North America, encompassing 7,483 acres of wetlands and open water. Adding to the magic of Pointe Mouillee is the fact that it lies within the Atlantic and Mississippi flyways bringing numerous migrating species of birds to rest and refuel.
Meeting Location: We will meet in the Sigler Road parking lot for Pointe Mouillee State Game Area. The Google map link to the parking lot is HERE.
This address will get you close to the parking lot - 8456 Sigler Road, South Rockwood, MI 48179. The Sigler Road Parking Lot is on Sigler Road, just east of the intersection at US Turnpike Road (also called West Jefferson). The Sigler Road parking lot is located at the dead end of the dirt portion of Sigler Road.
What to wear: The January weather at Point Mouillee can be very cold and windy, so dress in layers. Hand warmers, hats, thermal base layers, etc.
