Point Defiance forest photo walk

By Sierra Hartman

Overview

Classrooms are great for learning the basics but there’s nothing like actually going out and shooting some pictures in the real world.

We will meet at the top of Owen Beach Road where the trail crosses the road (see photos below). We'll be shooting mushrooms, mossy logs, banana slugs, and larger scenes on the tree-lined trails to shoot, all taking advantage of the unique lighting that the forest offers.

All skill levels welcome!

After the walk, we'll meet up at the Grit City Magazine office at 703 Pacific Ave. above Thai Pepper to go through all our photos. Feel free to bring a lunch to eat there or grab something on the way to the office.

Heads up: our office is at the top of a long flight of stairs. If you have mobility issues, please reach out first. We have a solution and I'll send you details first. Email sierra@gritcitymag.com with any questions.

What to expect:

  • Pro tips for exposure settings, angles, composition, white balance, etc.
  • Around one mile of walking
  • Feedback and guidance during editing
  • Group critique (voluntary participation)

What to bring:

  • Camera with any lenses you'd like to use
  • Basic understanding of your camera's functions
  • A hat with a bill or brim to help shield your camera in light rain
  • Clear plastic bag, either a large ziploc or thin produce bag (If it rains too hard I'll show you how to rig up a quick and easy camera cover)
  • Tripod and remote if you want to try long exposures
  • Clothes and footwear appropriate for rain and mud
  • Laptop for editing and retouching photos after

Agenda
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Forest walking

The trail we'll be on is mostly flat with some small hills. We'll be walking as a loose group but you're welcome to break off and focus on whatever catches your eye. I'll be available for tips and help with any issues that come up.

11:20 AM - 12:00 PM

Editing/retouching

We won't be doing any heavy retouching but if you'd like to show off some of the shots you got, this is the time to pick out the best ones and get some feedback. This is also a good time to eat some lunch if you want.

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Group critique

We'll have a large TV to display photos. This is completely voluntary but feedback from other photographers is one of the best ways to improve.
