Have trouble keeping your plants alive? Can’t remember when you last watered your plants? Join a duo of lazy engineers to learn how you can monitor your plants with simple sensors and keep them alive for a little bit longer!

In this hands-on class, you’ll learn to quantify basic environmental characteristics to help you determine if your plant is getting what it needs to survive. Using a few low-cost sensors, we’ll monitor characteristics, like light and soil moisture, and then program an Arduino to tell us whether the conditions are optimal for the type of plant you are growing.

We’ll teach you everything you need to know to build some simple circuits and nice coding loops in C++ — no previous coding, electronics, or science experience needed! Just a laptop that you can use during the class!

What will you learn?

Day 1: How to program and monitor sensor output with an Arduino using XOD, a visual cross-platform programming language for microcontrollers. If time allows, we will start building the small microcontroller plant monitoring system.

Day 2: Building off of Day 1, we will continue building out the plant monitoring system. We will also learn to incorporate a wireless communication module onto your plant monitoring system (using the Wio Terminal).

We will be using Biomaker beginner kits in the lab for the activities. You do not need to bring your own electronic supplies. You will be taking home these beginner kits at the end of the class!
