Picture A Scientist
Overview
As part of our annual International Women’s Day event, WomenSing will host a screening of the acclaimed documentary PICTURE A SCIENTIST, a powerful look at gender bias and perseverance in the world of science.
PICTURE A SCIENTIST chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.
WomenSing will surround this film with choral works that honor women as pioneers and truth-tellers, such as Libby Larsen’s Stepping Westward, celebrating the spirit of exploration.
Through music and film, this program invites us to consider how women’s voices, whether in laboratories, classrooms, or on concert stages, continue to expand what we know and challenge what we assume.
