Photographers of Miami: Ever wanted to learn how to take pictures of the Milky Way? Deep space? The moon?
Presenting our first ever workshop: a two-part series on Astrophotography!
Led by instructor Dan Becker (@dans_astrophotography), he will walk you through the learning process of long-exposure astrophotography.
Dan is a local astrophotographer, board member and outreach coordinator of Southern Cross Astronomical Society.
In this workshop, you will learn:
- How to take stunning pictures of space with whatever gear you have – use smart phones, digital cameras, DSLR/Mirrorless cameras, even film!
- The basics of long exposure photography, star tracking, optics, target acquisition and more!
- The usage of more specialized equipment and the latest tech available for this hobby.
Part 1: A two-hour talk on the basics of Astrophotography for beginners and intermediates, which includes moon viewing through a high-end telescope at the end of the talk!

Part 2: A group outing to the Florida Everglades to practice what we learned!

Please note:
Location for Part 2 is not at Yo Miami but at Tiagos Tacos – FIU to meet-greet-eat before departure to the Everglades. Please arrive at 5pm sharp!

It is highly suggested to attend Part 1 in order to attend Part 2 – make sure to attend both!

About the host:
Dan Becker is a director and outreach coordinator of Southern Cross Astronomical Society. Dan has a passion for astrophotography, volunteering and teaching sciences to the public, especially to the younger generation. Dan has volunteered to teach astronomy to children and families throughout the Miami-Dade Public Library system as well as the boys and girls scouts.
Dan Becker was born and raised in Hollywood, Florida. Dan earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from FIU and worked in Aerospace as a propulsion engineer from 2008 to 2014. He currently owns a manufacturing company specializing in 3D printed automotive components based out of Hollywood, Florida.
About SCAS:
The Southern Cross Astronomical Society (SCAS) is a non-profit organization based in Miami, dedicated to promoting astronomy and providing public education in South Florida. Originally founded in 1922 as the Southern Cross Observatory, SCAS is one of the oldest amateur astronomical societies in the Western Hemisphere. SCAS offers free telescope observing, lecture presentations, and research opportunities, while advocating for the preservation of dark skies and the reduction of light pollution.
SCAS hosts regular local events, including the reopening of the D'Auria Observatory every Saturday night and the reopening of Bill Sadowski Park, providing opportunities for stargazing and celestial exploration.
