About this event

Saturday, September 20 - Join us for a spectacular photo workshop experience at the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Warren County, NJ.

We'll have special access for our photographers to get up close as hot air balloons prepare to launchen masse at this fun, photographically interesting event. We'll even attend the pilots' meeting ahead of time for all the safety & launch information.

Before our workshop, we'll have a quick online class session on Wednesday, September 17 at 6:00pm. We'll talk about camera settings & lens choice, what to look for, and our agenda for the workshop so you'll arrive prepared for great photos. This session will be recorded for you to review afterward as well.

This photo workshop is open to photographers using any type of camera, even your phone. Dan's instructors will be right there with you to help you capture great images.

Key topics for this session

  • Getting creative with composition & perspective
  • Using natural light in interesting ways
  • Planning & preparing for an event- including light, weather, and knowing your subject
  • Storytelling & developing a project

Gear to consider:

  • We'll be very close to our subjects, so wide-angle to short telephoto zoom lenses (18-55mm, 24-70mm) will work well.
  • Ultra-wide lenses can be great to take in the full scene at close range (10-24mm)
  • Medium telephoto lenses will help you capture detail shots and isolate individual balloons (70-200mm)
  • A polarizing filter can help manage contrast, depending on the angle of the sun
  • Pack light, as we'll likely be walking around the field quite a bit!
  • For the Balloon Glow, you'll want to use a tripod. But you can leave that in your car until the sun goes down.

Rain Date: Sunday, September 21

Your workshop ticket includes:

  • Online class session to prepare for our outing
  • Admission & Parking for the Balloon Festival
  • On-location photo workshop
  • Special photo access for our group
  • After-sunset Balloon Glow event
