About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

PhillyPOP is a meetup group for discussing popular music–it’s like a book club for playlists. We meet roughly once a month and every meeting has a playlist of songs on a given theme (see below). Participants listen to the playlist in advance and discuss it at the meeting. It's a great way to connect with local music superfans and hear stuff you wouldn't have otherwise. You can find more info on what we're about here. If you'd like to be notified about future PhillyPOP events, make sure to check the box marked "Keep me updated on more events and news from this event organizer" when you RSVP, or follow us on our profile page.

NEXT MEETING: What songs make you laugh the hardest? What artists have consistently made you laugh (and was it on purpose or not)? What are some clever lyrics that might not be laugh-out-loud funny, but that have stuck with you over the years? What's the difference between self-consciously "comedic" genres vs. "regular" music that just so happens to have a funny moment or two? Which artists do some people think are funny, but make you cringe? (I'm looking at you, Weird Al.) Our next discussion will cover all these topics and more, as we explore the different dimensions of humor and cleverness in pop music. My starter playlist includes MF Doom, Loretta Lynn, CeeLo Green, Beck (twice), and a Johnny Cash song in which a doctor surgically removes his brain and implants it in a chicken, who goes on to become a country music sensation. (That's not a joke BTW--the song is called "Chicken in Black," it's absolutely ridiculous, and I can't wait to talk about it.)

Please send up to five of your funniest songs to me via the "Contact" link below (under the "Organized by" header) or email them to phillypopmeetup@gmail.com and I'll add them to the playlist. Also note that we are continuing our exploration of various West Philly venues and will be holding this meeting at Loco Pez at 47th & Baltimore.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost?

The event itself is free--you can buy food and drinks at the restaurant if you like.

How do I find the playlist?

Look in the description above for the links labeled "Spotify playlist" and "YouTube playlist."

How should I find you when I get there?

Look for a Black male with graying hair and glasses wearing a black PhillyPOP t-shirt. That's me. You can also ask the front host to direct you to the "Freelon" table.

Do I need to print out or show my ticket when I get there?

No, just let the group know you're there for "PhillyPOP" and you're in!

Can I still come if I don't have time to listen to the whole playlist beforehand?

Yes! While listening to the playlist is encouraged, we don't turn anyone away and you'll still be able to participate in the conversation. If you don't have time to listen to the whole thing, we recommend checking out as many of the songs you haven't heard as possible.

What should I do if there are no more tickets available?

Honestly with ghosting rates being what they typically are, you can just drop by even if the event is "sold out," we'll almost certainly have enough room for you.

What should I do if I've RSVPed but later find out I can't make it?

That's fine of course, but please go to your order confirmation email, click "Go to My Tickets" and click "Cancel Order" on the resulting page. This will free up your slot for someone else.

Who's in charge of PhillyPOP?

If you want to know more about us, visit our main Eventbrite page (phillypop.eventbrite.com or follow the link under the "Organized By" heading below) and click "Show More."

What's the parking situation?

There's street parking on and around Baltimore Ave near the venue.
