Around the world, digital pathology is releasing pathologists from their (physical) labs. They can now practice anatomical pathology anywhere, independent of the physical location of the biopsy, the glass slide and the patient. At the same time, sensitive multi-channel EEG measurements are giving an unprecedented view on brain activity to address disorders such as stroke, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury and Parkinson’s disease.

These spectacular advances in digital pathology and multi-channel EEG coincide with a rapid increase in the capabilities as well as the applications of artificial intelligence, creating entirely new fields: computational pathology and computational neurology.

In this talk I will discuss Philips’ vision on how artificial intelligence can help medical professionals and patients to increase the quality and efficiency of diagnoses such as tumor detection and seizure localization by sifting through these huge medical data sets consisting of gigapixel digital pathology whole slide images, and up to 256 channel EEG measurements. I will also explore how the availability of these novel and huge digital datasets can lead to new insights for treatment and diagnosis, such as noninvasive stimulation to treat epilepsy, and reliable localization and classification of cancer.

Dr. Bas Hulsken is the Chief Technology Officer of Philips Digital Pathology Solutions, and is in that role responsible for intellectual property management, the research program, and the advanced development group. His technology scope ranges from the design and development of fully automated digital slide scanners to the management and processing of very large images and the design of large scale architectures and concepts for deep learning and big data analytics. He obtained his two master degrees in Physics and Biophysics from the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. He did his PhD. work at the same university, designing novel types of Scanning Tunneling Microscopes to study fundamental aspects of (bio-)chemical reactions on surfaces submerged in liquids. He is the author of more than 30 scientific publications and patents.
