Philicam CNC Orientation - Advanced CNC (Members Only)
Overview
In this class you will learn how to operate the large Philicam CNC at Make Nashville and its LinuxCNC control system. This includes: how to start and warm up the machine, setup your material on the machine bed, ready and load your tooling, load your g-code, setup your coordinate system within LinuxCNC machine controls, setup dust collection, and successfully cut your project out on the machine.
Jon will teach you everything you need to know to operate the machine from start to finish (including cleanup). You will be given a procedure document detailing the lesson for reference.
What this class is NOT: This class is not a CAD/CAM class. In order to use this machine you need to already have knowledge of how to model your project in CAD and setup the tool paths in CAM. You are recommended to know or learn CAD/CAM skills prior to this class to fully understand the content.
Safety: CNC machines have a spinning cutting tool and are capable of generating large forces. They are inherently dangerous. The instructor will be extensively covering the different states the machine can be in, which are safe vs. dangerous, and how to put the machine in a safe state. This includes habits that help minimize the risk of accidental injury from the cutting head, correctly using the dust collection system to prevent dust inhalation, and what to do in case of a fire from friction on the workpiece or in the dust collector.
