Peer Specialists: A Trauma-Informed Approach to Recovery

About this Event
In behavioral health, peers offer their unique lived experience with mental health conditions to provide support focused on advocacy, education, mentoring, and motivation. Join us as Sarah Miller, Tim Bisson, Matt Silverman, and Vanessa Miller share about their lived experience with overcoming mental health challenges and their current role as peers in the community, offering trauma-informed support and navigation for individuals on their path to recovery.
Facilitators/Speakers:
Sarah Miller - Sarah Miller is the Family Navigator with NAMI Sarasota and Manatee counties, mental health consumer, family member, and advocate who is passionate about sharing the mental health resources and information which have personally benefited her own family.
Tim Bisson - Tim Bisson is a Certified Recovery Peer Specialist with first-hand experience with mental health recovery, in Recovery from addiction. He started his journey with Mental Health Community Centers first as a member turned volunteer, then a part-time peer specialist, and is now the Director of Peer Services.
Matt Silverman - Matt Silverman is a youth peer specialist who grew up receiving mental health services in Sarasota County. He is currently working for Success 4 Kids and Family’s Healthy Transitions program in Tampa while pursuing his certification as a youth recovery peer specialist with hopes to attend grad school to become a licensed therapist.
Vanessa Miller - Vanessa Miller is a volunteer at NAMI with the lived experience in mental health recovery. She is a Youth MOVE chapter member pursuing her certification as a recovery peer specialist for youth, while studying Psychology at USF. Vanessa is passionate about equity and ensuring open access to resources for all.
