Do I have to participate in the Sustainable Design Challenge?

Do whatever you feel comfortable doing! Some people will come as a team of four, others will arrive and get matched up with other makers (what we like to call "future friends") to form a team, and some will cheer from the sidelines.

This sounds fun. Can I bring my friends?

Yes, the more the merrier! Please just ask them to RSVP so we can keep an accurate head count.

Do I need to make a donation to Rediscover to attend?

This event is free and open to the public. While a donation to Rediscover is encouraged and donations of all sizes are very much welcome, a donation is not required for entry.

What is a "Sustainable Design Challenge"?

We'll give your team a pile of cardboard and other recycled and upcycled materials that Rediscover saved from LA's trash stream to play around with. When everyone's ready, we'll use our Design Challenge Randomizer to generate a Client, their Problem, and a Limitation. Creative silliness ensues.

What do you mean "a Client, their Problem, and a Limitation?"

We pick cards from the deck, Clients like LABRADOODLE, ORGANIC FARMER, or ROMAN CENTURION, Problems like "Needs to get cross a river," "Shelter in a storm, or "Carry water," and a Limitation like "Costs less than $10," "Made out of food," or "Solar Powered." You craft a model before time's up.

Join Patagonia Santa Monica and Rediscover Center on Thursday, November 13, at 7:00pm (doors open at 6:30pm) for “Crafting Change,” a lively evening of sustainability, creativity, and community in support of Rediscover Center’s hands-on arts education programming for kids on the Westside and beyond.

We’re providing community members with a friendly space to connect with one another, compete in a fast paced Cardboard Design Challenge, and have a chance to win Patagonia gear and other fun prizes!

Enjoy drinks, appetizers, and snacks. Great for officemates from the Creative Economy. Thank you to Patagonia Santa Monica for donating the use of their beautiful Third Street Promenade location for this exclusive after-hours event.

While this evening is free and open to the public, a reservation is required, and a donation to support Rediscover Center is highly encouraged. $50 gives a youth a half day woodworking workshop. $500 covers a Creative Reuse field trip for a class of 1st graders. $5,000 pays for a semester of after school classes.
