About this event

Join us for a thoughtful conversation with contemporary artist Ariane Lu Geon, founder of Space a+Lu—an artist residency based in Hoi An, Vietnam. In this session, we’ll explore what it really takes to start a residency, how residencies can uplift local communities, and how visiting artists can meaningfully engage with local culture.

Act Fast: The seats are limited.

About The Speaker:
Ariane Lu Geon (b. 1974) is a contemporary artist dividing time between Denmark, Switzerland, Iceland, and Vietnam. Having practiced in photography, installations, performances, mixed medias, and textile art, Ariane joined the Women Art Collective in 2022 and, in 2024, founded the art residency Space a+Lu in Hoi An, Vietnam.

The vision for Space a+Lu is to foster deeper cultural exchange by integrating local Vietnamese artists into the residency program. By 2026, the goal is to have half of the participating artists be from the local community, offering them a one-month residency free of charge. This initiative will create a vibrant exchange of ideas and creativity between international and Vietnamese artists.

About The Session:
In this Q&A, Ariane Lu Geon ad Kevin Andrew Heslop will guide us through the multifaceted process of founding an artist residency—from ideation to execution, and the many creative, logistical, and cultural considerations in between. She’ll reflect on her experience launching Space a+Lu , and discuss the importance of building a residency that not only supports artistic exploration but also contributes meaningfully to its local context. We'll explore how residencies can serve as platforms for cultural exchange, how to foster long-term community relationships, and what makes a residency truly valuable for both visiting and local artists.

Whether you're an artist, curator, or cultural worker, this session offers real-world strategies and inspiration for building sustainable and inclusive creative spaces.

You'll also have the chance to ask Ariane your own questions and gain personalized insights from her experience.
