About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour

Narrative Medicine and Narrative Therapy underscore the lived experience of the clinician as we listen to our patient's story. Our intellect follows the decision tree of diagnosis and charts symptoms while we push aside our emotional self experiences.

This session explores and aspect of Narrative Medicine called Parallel Charting. We use literature and art as entry points into discernment and creativity. We remove the barriers of compartmentalization through giving voice to what it is like to be with that patient: what comes up, memories, feelings and intuitve connections.

Frequently asked questions

How long is this event?

The room will open a few minutes before our start time of 4:00 cdt so that we can gather and see each other. Activities will start at 4:00 cdt and we will finish at 5:00 cdt. The room will stay open for 10 minutes after we finish activities for fellowship.

What about anonymity?

We have a group norm that says: "What is said in this room stays in this room. It will not be repeated without permission."

What about HIPAA and patient confidentiality?

We have a group norm that we will follow HIPAA guidelines and remove any material that can identify a patient from the story such as full name, where the patient lives or personalized information that will expose a patient’s identity. We do not need to change gender or age of the client.

My question isn’t on this page. How do I reach Dr. Perrin?

What is the Agenda?

We’ll gather and read a poem together. We’ll have a brief discussion then take time to write with a prompt. We’ll go into small groups to share then return to the larger group to share our work and our understandings as they unfold.
