Palimpsest - Experimental workshop with Issam Kourbaj

Friday, 24th October

19:00-21:00, Seminar rooms 2&3, Yusuf Hamied Court, Christ’s College

A palimpsest is a manuscript or piece of writing material on which later writing has been superimposed on effaced earlier writing. This is an experimental workshop with artist Issam Kourbaj, where participants are encouraged to explore the palimpsest as a medium - layering material, effacing the surface, and superimposing meaning.

We will provide a variety of different materials to explore the layering and effacing effect – ink, paint, monoprint. Please also bring along at least ten small fragments of material to work with - this can be images, newspaper clippings, textiles, book pages, tickets, envelopes - anything that has had a previous life, or was once something.

Open to all - reserve a free ticket on Eventbrite (limited spaces).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Issam Kourbaj comes from a background of fine art, architecture and theatre design. He was born in Syria and trained at the Institute of Fine Arts in Damascus, the Repin Institute of Fine Arts & Architecture in Leningrad (St Petersburg) and at Wimbledon School of Art (London). Since 1990, he has lived and worked in Cambridge, eventually becoming an Artist in Residence at Christ’s College, a Bye-Fellow (2007-2011) and a Lector in Art. His work Cambridge Palimpsest, instrumentalises the palimpsest as a means to uncover the heritage, continuity/disruption and memory of the city.
