Oriki: A Praise Poetry Workshop
Overview
Join us for Oríkì: Poetry, Language, and Value in Yorùbá Thought, an interactive class exploring the Yorùbá art of praise poetry. Oríkì is more than words—it is rhythm, performance, and value-making, a way of affirming identity, honoring heritage, and calling forth àṣẹ through language.
In these sessions, we will:
✨ Learn the basics of Yorùbá tones, sounds, and pronunciation
✨ Explore the cultural role of oríkì in naming, honoring, and memory-keeping
✨ Listen to and reflect on examples of traditional oríkì
✨ Practice creating and reciting our own oríkì for self, community, and nature
No prior knowledge of the Yorùbá language is required—just an open spirit and willingness to engage. This is a welcoming space for learners, artists, and community members interested in language, poetry, music, and cultural connection.
📖 What you’ll leave with:
- A foundation in Yorùbá language and poetic style
- Your own crafted oríkì verse
