Join meditation teacher Henry Shukman for a very special book reading on Friday July 19 at The Alembic in Berkeley, CA. Henry will read from his new book Original Love: The Four Inns on the Path of Awakening, which will be published by HarperOne in early July. Henry will read key passages from the book, and share stories, reflections and insights on how the book came to be, and why its vision is a vital contribution to the current landscape of meditation practice, and also to the condition in which we currently find our world and lives. Hardcover copies will be available for purchase, and Henry will be available afterwards for book signing.

A manifesto, a map, and a manual, this essential guide for spirituality in the twenty-first century replaces the concept of original sin with original love as the true foundation of our life.

“Powerful, poetic, transformative”

— Tara Brach

"Henry is one of the wisest and most poetical teachers of dharma we have today."

— Sam Harris

An increasing number of people today feel disconnected, disengaged, and lonely, while divisiveness is at an all time high. Many of us are seeking solace, for ourselves, loved ones and the wider world. Original Love is the secular spiritual handbook we need to ease our troubles.

Renowned mindfulness teacher Henry Shukman provides a way forward based on four “inns” of practice —Mindfulness, Support, Absorption, and Awakening. Together, they lead to deep and fulfilling meditation for practitioners at all levels. And it works! Shukman includes personal anecdotes and inspiring stories from his students that reveal how it has transformed their lives.

Urgently needed, Original Love helps us create peace for ourselves and our times by

  • reducing stress, anxiety, and depression;
  • relaxing the mind and body;
  • easing feelings of worry and regret, anger and frustration;
  • improving decision-making and executive functioning;
  • and awakening to our true nature: unconditional love

Finding a sense of love is a critical purpose of meditation. This book guides us back to the loving peace that lives at the center of things, which is Original Love itself.

Henry Shukman is an authorized Zen Master in the Sanbo Zen lineage, and is spiritual director emeritus of Mountain Cloud Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In addition to teaching meditation, Henry is an award-winning poet and author, whose memoir One Blade of Grass recounts his own journey through meditation practice. His struggles and traumatic experiences as a youth, combined with a spontaneous awakening experience at 19, and many years of training under several teachers, paved the way for his developing a well-rounded approach to healing and awakening through meditation. His latest book is Original Love, out in July 2024.
