Art in the Multicultural Center
"As a child, I had a love/ hate relationship with my own natural hair." Pierre shares, "In my younger adult years, I had to learn to heal from the negative perceptions forced upon me through generations of unrealistic beauty standards rooted in hatred of various forms of my humanity as a melanated woman of the world. I had to learn to see myself through my own eyes and love what I see regardless of what the outside noise may say. My art is a call to action to urge others like me to always view themselves through their own eyes and to always be confident, encouraging and loving to their own reflections."
“My art mainly focuses on positive representation of black culture, capturing unique hairstyles and vibrant jewelry. I do not limit myself to just one medium, as I also incorporate 3D elements such as clay, hair extensions, and textured paste. My main choice of colors includes pink, turquoise, and gold. I prefer to use vibrant colors in order to capture the eyes of admirers. I hope that my art can bring creative inspiration and joy to those that are its presence.”
Born and raised in south Florida to Haitian immigrants, Guerline Pierre fell in love with art at the age of six years old drawing with pencils. As a child she noticed the admiration for her talent from family, teachers and classmates alike, which then fueled her creative journey. She started painting in 2019 and has since then turned it into a career. Her art is mainly focused on positive representation of black culture, nostalgic memories from her childhood, and other random day to day things that bring her joy. She hopes her art will inspire those who see it.

Deeply rooted in African culture, braids symbolize heritage, creativity, and self-expression. Beyond their cultural significance, box braids have become a powerful fashion statement, celebrating identity, beauty, and resilience while allowing versatility and individuality in modern style.
Keep Going by Guerline Pierre
I enjoyed drawing on MS paint during my childhood on my family’s Windows 95 computer. I decided to capture this on canvas and incorporate a positive message as a reminder to keep going no matter what you are doing. “OK” button symbolizes to continue and “Later” button symbolizes the importance of needing to rest every once in a while.
