Opening Reception of "Time Between Photographs: Art of the Photobook"

By The Center for Photography at Woodstock

Overview

On view November 29, 2025 – January 11, 2026

Time Between Photographs: Art of the Photobook, an exhibition in our Community Gallery, showcases photobooks in various stages of development, and framed work from those books. The books were developed in two classes held at CPW this year, led by photographer Adrianna Ault.

For over two years, Adrianna Ault has been coming to CPW to teach photographers how to integrate creative photobook practice into their work. Photobook I was a 10-week course in how to make a photobook dummy. Photobook II was a 10-week course in which students brought their projects to CPW to use its new book press. Both courses revolved heavily around developing photographic work through the physical book form. Making a photobook is an art in itself, a different practice of art-making than developing a single image or a body of work. Pairing and sequencing images is pivotal and can change a book’s meaning–this part of the process alone takes up half the class. The exhibition at CPW is a good opportunity to look under the hood at photobooks in various stages of development: some are “dummies,” some more finalized, some fully finished. Join us to meet these amazing local artists, and find inspiration for your own photobook!

Note: The CPW book press is an in-house digital printing press service for the local artist community and beyond. Currently in a piloting phase, it will specialize in zines, chapbooks, small-edition projects, and artist books. Overseeing the book press studio are: Sarrah Danziger, CPW education program manager; Raymond Meeks, CPW’s current photobook artist in residence; and Jackson Hardin, press operator. We will share updates about the book press here, in our social media, and our website. For more information, email bookpress@cpw.org.
