Where is the Ground, Where is the Center? is an intimate installation featuring collaborations and individual works by members of Long Beach’s ART REALM Collective. This month-long project includes poetry, visual art, conversations and experiences exploring the ways in which we find resilience in the midst of challenges.

About the Exhibition: In the past year and a half, we’ve all faced great uncertainty and loss. It has required courage -- not an absence of fear or doubt, but determination in spite of these. It has also called for introspection. Flux Art Space is curious about the things we’ve discovered during this time. How have we stayed grounded, stayed strong, stayed sane in the middle of it all? Or, how are we making the gradual return from falling apart?

ART REALM Collective has made a collaborative response to this inquiry. The catalyst of their project was 2020 as a breaking point, inflamed with the shared stress of the pandemic, political strife, environmental concerns, police brutality and heightened tensions over systemic racism. However, through their work they speak of the individual struggles that many of us have been experiencing -- beyond and nested within the larger challenges we’ve been confronted with.

In “Where is the Ground, Where is the Center?” ART REALM artists take an unflinching look at concerns that are current and personal, some that have roots reaching back centuries. Through written word and visual art, the artists express a sense of what it’s like to move through despair. They also point to pathways and processes that bring relief and healing.

About ART REALM: Since 2017, ART REALM Collective has been hosting a curated, seasonal visual art showcase at various venues throughout Long Beach, California. The events, also called ART REALM, serve the longstanding need for art experiences that highlight the work of talented emerging artists who are underrepresented in the art community. With the leadership of director Brandie Davison and a core of dedicated artists, the Collective supports and uplifts emerging artists while prioritizing artists of color.

About Flux Art Space: Founded in 2018, Flux Art Space connects emerging and mid-career artists with each other and with members of the vibrant community of Long Beach—and Southern California—through exhibitions, workshops, and gatherings. We encourage cross-cultural and cross-generational dialogue and celebrate creative expression as an integral part of life.
